How to block apps while studying (and actually focus)
A simple study setup: block distracting apps for focused blocks, take planned breaks, and lock the phone until your study tasks are done.
Studying with a phone next to you means studying with a slot machine next to you. One glance at a notification and twenty minutes are gone.
Choose what gets blocked
Do not block everything. Block the feeds: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Reddit, games. Keep the tools you study with.
Work in focus blocks
Set a timer lock for one study block, for example 45 minutes. When the timer ends, the apps open again. That is your break. Then start the next block.
With focus intervals (Pro) this runs on its own: a few free minutes every hour, locked the rest.
Lock until the work is done
Time is not always the right measure. Sometimes the goal is "finish chapter 4 and 20 flashcards". A habits lock keeps the apps closed until every task on today's list is checked off.
Remove the easy escape
On exam weeks, give the password to a study partner with a friend lock. You cannot talk yourself out of a block you cannot open.
A sample study evening
- 18:00 to 18:45: timer lock, chapter reading.
- 18:45 to 18:55: break, apps open.
- 18:55 to 19:40: timer lock, practice questions.
- After that: habits lock until the flashcards are done.
Short, kept blocks beat long, broken ones. Start with one tonight.
Frequently asked
- How long should a study block be?
- Many students use 25 to 50 minute blocks with short breaks. Pick a length you can finish, then extend it once it feels easy.
- Should I put my phone in another room?
- It helps a lot if you can. If you need the phone for study apps, block only the distracting apps instead of the whole phone.
- Can I still use my phone for study tools during a block?
- Yes. You choose which apps are blocked. Study apps, calculators and messages from family can stay open.
