Screen Time not working? Why the limit never sticks

iPhone Screen Time limits are easy to ignore. Here is why they fail, the settings that make them stronger, and what to use when they are not enough.

You set a one hour limit on Instagram. A week later your weekly report says four hours a day. Screen Time is working exactly as designed. The design is the problem.

Limits are reminders

When an App Limit runs out, iOS shows a screen with Ignore Limit. Tap it and you choose one more minute, fifteen minutes or the rest of the day. It is a speed bump, not a wall.

Make Screen Time stronger

If you want to stay with built in tools:

  • Turn on Block at End of Limit in each limit.
  • Set a Screen Time passcode, and have a friend or partner type it in so you do not know it.
  • Use Downtime for fixed hours, for example 22:00 to 7:00.
  • Remove the apps from the home screen so the habit has to start from search.

When that is still not enough

The passcode trick works until you need to change something and have to ask for the code every time. And Screen Time has no simple way to say "locked until I finish today's tasks" or "free for 10 minutes every hour".

That is what Atomic Blocker adds on top of the same Apple framework:

  • Timer locks that hold for 30 minutes or 4 hours.
  • A friend lock where a friend keeps the password.
  • Schedules, a habits lock that opens when your to do list is done, and focus intervals (Pro).

Keep Screen Time for the daily overview. Use a lock for the hours that matter.

Frequently asked

Why does Screen Time let me ignore the limit?
App Limits are designed as reminders, not locks. Without a passcode, Ignore Limit is always one tap away, and even with one, you know your own code.
How do I make Screen Time stricter?
Turn on Block at End of Limit, set a Screen Time passcode, and ideally let someone else choose that passcode.
Can an app blocker work alongside Screen Time?
Yes. Atomic Blocker uses the same Apple framework, so it lives next to your Screen Time settings and adds timers, schedules and a friend lock on top.
